Traditional "gust lock" systems lock the control surfaces rigidly in place, and at high winds, can actually cause damage to control surfaces that cannot move at all. For our airplanes, that's not a risk we're willing to take.
The "Gust Buster" is an innovative gust control system for light aircraft, a new approach to an old problem. It is not a "gust lock" but rather a gust control system that absorbs the energy of high wind events protecting the airframe and control surfaces from damage.
The Gust Buster system utilizes compression springs balanced for rudder size and industrial grade shock cord to hold the control surfaces in their neutral positions in light to moderate winds, but allows them to move and "unload" prior to bending in high energy gusts events, as the system absorbs the energy of the gust. The goal, of course, is to protect the airplane, and not just lock the control surfaces into position.
