4" Paint Protection Film, sold by the foot.
Please consider choosing USPS Priority Mail over
USPS First Class shipping for this item. The rolled material is
difficult to send in an envelope and may get creased or wrinkled. USPS
Priority Mail works MUCH better for only a couple dollars difference. UPS is OK too, but usually more expensive.
4" wide material is perfect for protecting the rub areas on Van's RV flaps. Simply apply to the top forward surface of the flap.Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film (PPF) is a virtually invisible barrier
against flying debris, abrasion and weathering. When applied to your
aircraft’s vulnerable areas, such as under fiberglass fairings, or on
leading edges of gear legs and tailwheels, PPF acts like armor to guard
against screwdriver slips, rock chips, bug etchings, and other debris.
Use the film wherever you need protection from scratches or abrasion.
Uses:
- on
top of RV flap at the wing skin intersection
- under fairings
- around
cowl fasteners
- under aft canopy edge on RV-3,4, 8, etc..
- leading
edges of wings or HS
- leading edge of tailwheel to prevent grass
from wearing through the paint
- behind ignition switch to
prevent paint wear from swinging keys
- behind knobs, latches, or
other moving cockpit parts
- also
makes an inexpensive, easily
replaceable cell phone screen protector!
Installation
Installing 3M Paint Protection Film is as easy as applying a piece of
tape. 3M Paint Protection Film is removable up to 5 years later with no
residue left behind. This allows allows the film to be used in areas
where removal for maintenance is required.
1) Apply only to a clean surface, free of wax, grease, etc., between 55°
and 90° F.
2) Always check film position, shape, and size before applying.
3) After removing protective liner, liberally spray a solution of 25%
isopropyl alcohol and 75% water on film adhesive surface and aircraft
surface. This step may be omitted for small, easily applied pieces of
film, just be careful and don't get fingerprints on the adhesive side of the film.
4) Starting in the center, squeegee the solution and air from under the
film using overlapping strokes. Work from the center towards the edges.
Be careful to avoid creasing the film. Film may be removed and
repositioned as long as the adhesive is kept wet. Allow the film to
relax back to the original size and shape before reapplying. Film may
be stretched up to 20% if needed to conform to a curved surface.
5) Remove any LARGE bubbles with a pin. Use your finger or squeegee to move
the air towards the pinhole.
6) Any SMALL bubbles that remain will
dissipate as the fluid dries from under the PPF. Don't panic, bubbles
are normal and will go away! A little sunshine will help them disappear
even faster.
Note: 3M Paint Protection Film is not recommended
for
the leading edges of propellers or other areas where the loss of the
film might affect flight safety.
The Technology
Most of us have some experience with Scotch™ Tape, whether to repair
something at the office or to wrap a gift at home. Scotch™ Tape can have
as many as eight layers of material in a product as thin as a sheet of
paper. What makes such layering possible is the science, process, and
technology of microreplication and 3M is the foremost expert in this
field.
3M Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film employs that same 3M innovation in
microreplication to produce a 6 mil urethane film that is coated with a
tough and resilient stretchable clear coat. The stretchable clear coat
(below) is designed to make the film glossy, maintenance-free, stain and
fade-resistant for years. Consequently, 3M Scotchgard™ Paint Protection
Film allows customers to treat the film as they do their paint. There
is no special maintenance required with 3M Scotchgard™ Paint Protection
Film.
The Difference
Many competitive films utilize only two layers of construction and rely
upon waxes and regular cleaning to resist stains and maintain gloss.
Competitive films produce types of clear coats that leave the film rigid
which creates undue stress. This stress can lead to peeling edges,
surface imperfections, and lifted areas. 3M backs its claims with a 5
year limited warranty.
